Multidisciplinary faculty will deliver practical information on the management and treatment of diabetes and other conditions of insulin resistance. The instructors include prominent medical doctors, naturopathic physicians, nutritionists, and clinical pharmacists from medical departments around the Puget Sound, including the University of Washington and Bastyr University.

Ryan Bradley, ND
Dr. Bradley will present a mechanistic review of the current evidence on natural therapies in type 2 diabetes/insulin resistance and propose a clinical algorithm to direct their use. In his opening address, Dr. Bradley will provide an overview on the current guidelines for diabetes treatment and discuss their rationale. Dr. Bradley is adjunct clinical faculty for the Diabetes & Cardiovascular Wellness Program at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health. He also works as a research fellow at Bastyr University where he is currently conducting clinical trials of nutrients in type 2 diabetes. Dr. Bradley recently served on the Diabetes Clinical Improvement Team as a Bastyr delegate to the Puget Sound Health Alliance. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Alvin Goo, PharmD
Dr. Goo will discuss the therapeutic rationale of complex combinations of prescription medicines, i.e. poly-pharmacy, seen in the diabetic population. He will also discuss interactions and adverse reactions that may occur. Dr. Goo is currently a clinical pharmacist at Harborview Medical Center with the Departments of Pharmacy and Family Medicine and Specialty Primary Care Pharmacy Residency Director. He currently has an adjunct appointment as clinical assistant professor in the Schools of Pharmacy and Family Medicine at the University of Washington.
Douglas C. Lewis, ND Dr. Lewis will guide the audience in the creation of treatment protocols using physical medicine and hydrotherapy in the treatment of diabetic complications and co-morbidities, including indications and contraindications for therapy. Dr. Lewis has been a faculty member in the Physical Medicine department at Bastyr University for 16 years, including two appointments as department Chair. He has two busy physical medicine-focused practices in Seattle and Monroe, Washington. Dr. Lewis has authored chapters in several publications including Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide and The Textbook of Natural Medicine Third Edition. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapy.
Jennifer C. Lovejoy, PhD
Dr. Lovejoy will present a research update on the role of diet and nutrient composition in weight loss and diabetes. Her presentation will focus on translating recent nutrition trial findings into clinical practice. Dr. Lovejoy is a Research Professor and Dean of the School of Nutrition and Exercise Science at Bastyr University. She earned her doctorate in Physiological Psychology from Emory University and subsequently did postdoctoral training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Emory University School of Medicine. In 1991, Dr. Lovejoy joined the faculty of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA, and became director of the Women’s Nutrition Research Program. Dr. Lovejoy has published more than 50 scientific papers in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals and frequently lectures at national and international scientific meetings on nutritional issues for women and the role of diet in obesity and diabetes prevention.
Erica Oberg, ND
Dr. Oberg will discuss the role of Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) in the treatment and long-term management of type 2 diabetes, and will highlight elements of the naturopathic approach which may be different to other models in health delivery. Current research on functional foods, behavioral assessment in disordered eating, guidelines for exercise prescription, and stress management approaches will be presented. Dr. Oberg is naturopathic physician at the Institute of Complementary Medicine in Seattle and a Health Services scholar in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Washington. She has collaborated on several federal research grants including investigations of dietary composition in weight loss and multifaceted lifestyle interventions in type 2 diabetes. Dr. Oberg recently served on the Cardiovascular Disease Clinical Improvement Team as a Bastyr University delegate to the Puget Sound Health Alliance. Dr. Oberg is currently a consultant to the WA Department of Health on a project to revitalize cardiovascular disease prevention in WA State.
Nalini Singh, MD
Dr. Singh will provide a comprehensive update on non-insulin agents in the treatment of diabetes. Her presentation will include indications, contra-indications, and clinical expectations on well-known oral therapies and highlight new and emerging classes of medications. Dr. Singh received her medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed her Endocrinology fellowship at the Veteran Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.She is the Medical Director of the Diabetes clinics at VA Puget Sound and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Nutrition at the University of Washington.She is an active clinician-educator at the VA and has given many local and regionallectures on diabetes and its complications, including a talk on the new insulins at the American Diabetes Association Postgraduate course in 2006 and talks on diabetic neuropathy and foot prevention at national VA/DoD diabetic foot symposia.
Dace L. Trence, MD, FACE
Dr. Trence will present a detailed discussion of the role of insulin therapy in the treatment of diabetes, including rationale for early insulin therapy and differences in available insulin preparations. Her presentation will include clinical guidelines on how to begin insulin therapy and how to identify suboptimal insulin dosing. Dr. Trence is currently Director of the Diabetes Care Center at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle and is an associate professor of medicine at the UW. She serves on the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists Board of Directors, chairing the AACE CME committee. She has been on the editorial boards of several journals including Clinical Diabetes and has had articles published in JCEM, JAMA and is a co-author of Optimizing Diabetes Care for the Practitioner.
